Commissioner for Investigations Peter Sheridan yesterday (Tuesday) met Minister of Justice Naomi Long, to set out how the Commission plans to support victims, survivors of the Troubles / Conflict and their families who request an investigation into their cases.

Committing to Human Rights laws and the rights of victims and families was the key message Chief Commissioner of the Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery Sir Declan Morgan delivered to the Council of Europe in Strasbourg on Thursday.

The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery has now had its powers commenced so that it can carry out investigations into deaths and serious harm from the Troubles/Conflict in Northern Ireland.

The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery takes on the remit to investigate deaths and serious harm related to the Troubles/Conflict from Wednesday of this week. The Commission’s powers and duties commence and the Commission will be opening dedicated telephone, email and postal routes for the public to contact the Commission about investigating their case.  

The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery has today outlined how it will continue investigations into the deaths resulting from the Troubles/Conflict in Northern Ireland, which were subject to Advanced stage Inquests and not able to conclude before 1 May.

The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery has agreed arrangements with the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland (PONI), to provide independent oversight of the use of police powers by designated Commission officers in Northern Ireland.

The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery has today published a consultation seeking views and feedback on its draft Equality Scheme. At the heart of a trauma-informed approach, and the Commission’s wider principles to be ECHR compliant and deliver something for everyone, is fostering a diverse and inclusive approach, as underpinned by section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act.

Responding to a consultation issued by the Northern Ireland Office about making regulations under section 34 of the Northern Ireland Troubles (Legacy and Reconciliation) Act 2023, Commissioner for Investigations, Peter Sheridan said: “The Commission takes its obligations to handle all information it receives seriously. Requesting individuals and witnesses must have the confidence that any information they give us is protected and used properly.”
