ICRIR publishes draft Equality Scheme for consultation

The Independent Commission for Reconciliation and Information Recovery has today published a consultation seeking views and feedback on its draft Equality Scheme. At the heart of a trauma-informed approach, and the Commission’s wider principles to be ECHR compliant and deliver something for everyone, is fostering a diverse and inclusive approach, as underpinned by section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act.

The draft Equality Scheme sets out the initial work that the commission proposes to take to cultivate an inclusive and diverse organisation that listens to and understands the people it will serve. The scheme proposes the following measures:

  • undertaking an audit of inequalities during our first two years of operation,
  • developing an action plan based on the results of the audit to recommend improvements,
  • incorporating the recommendations into our business planning processes.
  • Undertaking screening of key operational policies over the next year to consider their application in light of the s75 duties,
  • continually monitoring progress and updating the action plan to ensure it remains effective and relevant.

The draft Equality scheme follows the publication last month of a consultation into our draft Disability Action Plan. Both documents demonstrate the Commission’s commitment to promoting and delivering equality throughout ICRIR, including both the people who work in it and those that it serves.

Full details on the Disability Action plan can be found here.

The public consultation on the Equalities Scheme can be found here and will be open until 30th May 2024.  All responses should be submitted by email to equality@icrir.independent-inquiry.uk or by post to Freepost ICRIR.
