ICRIR Commissioner for Investigations meets with Minister of Justice

Published:

Commissioner for Investigations Peter Sheridan yesterday (Tuesday) met Minister of Justice Naomi Long, to set out how the Commission plans to support victims, survivors of the Troubles / Conflict and their families who request an investigation into their cases.

Peter Sheridan outlined the steps the Commission is taking to adhere to Articles 2 and 3 of the European Convention of Human Rights and respect the principles of the Belfast Good Friday Agreement.  The Commission also provided details of the Enhanced Inquisitorial Proceedings which enables the Commission to complete investigations into Troubles/ Conflict era deaths which were previously subject to inquests.

Peter Sheridan said:

Having begun receiving contact from the public from May to explore how the Commission can help them through its investigations, we are assessing initial enquiries. This involves interaction with the existing justice organisations.

“We are grateful for the Justice Minister’s confirmation that the justice organisations for which she has responsibility will comply with the statutory obligations placed upon them to facilitate the work of the Commission. This is an important and welcome signal to the entire justice sector and wider society. “
